pro advice

Designer Secrets

What the pros know — and now you do too.

Rug Sizing

A rug should anchor your seating arrangement. At minimum, the front legs of your sofa should sit on it — but go bigger. Rooms feel more intentional with oversized rugs.

Furniture Arrangement

Create conversation zones. Pull furniture away from walls, angle pieces inward, and ensure sightlines flow naturally through the room.

Lighting Layers

Three layers always: ambient (overhead), task (reading/working), and accent (wall sconces, table lamps). Good lighting transforms a space more than any paint color.

Gallery Walls

Lay everything out on the floor first. Odd numbers work best. Mix frame styles and scales. Leave 2–3 inches between frames for a curated, intentional look.

Mixing Patterns

Start with a scale rule: pair a large-scale pattern with a medium and small-scale. Keep one neutral to anchor the mix. If unsure, stick to two patterns max.

Paint Selection

Get samples. Paint them on large poster boards and view them at different times of day. The finish matters more than you think — matte feels intimate, satin feels refined.
